Customer Services Director Huw Lewis said: "Services are now back up and running between Wallsend and St James.

"I’m grateful to customers for their patience during this period of disruption and I am sorry for the inconvenience caused.

"Our engineers have repaired a significant amount of damage to the overhead line in two different locations. The damage was caused when a train developed an issue with its pantograph and brought the overhead wires down as passed through."
