Dave Jones: Angry at defeat

Pools had the measure of their hosts in the first half, with keeper Joe Fryer saving a Shola Ameobi penalty.

But the former Newcastle United frontman, signed last month by his old St James's Park team-mate Kevin Nolan, finished with aplomb within two minutes of the re-start after being put through by Jorge Grant.

And Grant added a stunning second home goal himself 19 minutes from time from just outside the area.

Pools pulled one back in the 78th minute with a Haydyn Hollis OG but despite some late pressure, they could not find an equaliser.

The only consolation for Dave Jones and his team was the fact Leyton Orient lost 3-0 to Grimsby which kept the gap to the relegation zone to six points with 10 games to go.

Jones was in no mood to praise the two well-taken home goals.

"That wasn't about their quality, that was our bad play," he said.

"The first goal, we've thrown the ball down the line, given it away and it's ended up in the back of our net.

"Yeah, the second goal was nicely stuck in, but who was marking at the edge of our box?

"They might have been quality goals for Kevin [Nolan], but not for me."

Jones gave a pat on the back for Fryer for his stop from Ameobi's spot-kick after Lewis Hawkins was penalised for handball.

"Joe saved the penalty and gave us a lift," said Jones. "But the goals we conceded are ones we should not be giving away, they are easy to stop."

It was a fifth defeat on the road since Jones took over at the Northern Gas & Power Stadium.

He admitted he was angry with the side.

"When you control a game you've got to get something from it," he said.

"We had an opportunity today to get some points and we didn't take it, that's why I'm so angry with them."
