Olympic golden girl Nicola Adams hopes for great things from Savannah Marshall

The two fighters are in Turkey with Team GB for the European Olympic qualifying tournament, which gets under way this weekend.

There are only two Rio places in each of the three women’s weight categories to be won in Samsun, with the draw scheduled for later today.

And Adams, the first Olympic women’s boxing champion at London 2012, is confident her friend and team-mate can make this summer’s games.

“Savannah’s looking really good,” said Adams.“She’s been world champion, world number one, medalled at the Europeans – she has all the tools.

“She’s been through the qualification process before so she knows what to expect.

“I’m hoping for great things from Savannah.”

On paper, Marshall is certainly one of the favourites in the U75 kilo division this week in Turkey.

The 24-year-old Headland ABC middleweight is chasing her second Olympic appearance, having boxed in London, only to fall at the quarter-final hurdle.

Marshall’s pedigree is top class – world champion in 2012 and Commonwealth Games gold medallist in 2014, so only the Olympic title is missing.

Adams, of course, does have the most famous of all sporting possessions.

And she says winning her second Olympic gold is the thing which drives her on in the sport.

“I want to make history,” she told SportMail. “We’ve never had a double gold medal winner in history in Britain – male or female.

“I’d love that piece of history.”

So are there any thoughts of seeking a life of fortune as well as fame?

“Not yet,” she smiled. “I need this medal.

“Hopefully, I can get gold in the World Championships in a few weeks which would give me the full set.

“Imagine if I could get the Olympic gold again? That would be unbelievable.

“Winning that gold in London is a memory I will treasure for the rest of my life.”
