MIKE HILL: leadership has been chaotic, erratic and frankly woeful

U-turns happening in quick succession, diversion tactics aimed at deflecting attention from Ministers, like the farcical idea that the BBC was to ban the singing of ‘Rule Britannia’ from the Proms, it’s frightening to think that the current, Boris led, Government have only been in power for just over 9 months.

Yes, they’ve had to deal with a world pandemic, but their leadership has been chaotic, erratic and frankly woeful.

Ministers have dodged bullets by seeking to blame others; on the Care Home disaster they pointed the finger at the scientists and indeed Care Home owners and staff themselves.

The recent school exam results fiasco was blamed on the exam board and their miserable record on Test, Track and Trace was the fault of civil servants and Public Health England.

It strikes me that Boris is very much like Nero; fiddling while Rome burns.

The UK has one of the highest per capita COVID related death rate in the world with 41,501 fatalities registered as of Monday this week. It’s a grim record that you don’t get to know about from the Tory press, who obsess about other countries, air bridges, returning to school, returning to work and illegal immigrants; anything but the state of our own nation and the failings of our own Government.

In the middle of a pandemic, with a second COVID 19 spike predicted, the Health Secretary, Matt Hancock, suddenly announces that the organisation at the forefront of the response to Coronavirus is to be replaced by a new National Institute for Health Protection with all the expense and upheaval which goes with it, as well as the loss of local teams whose work has been critical to the wellbeing of the likes of you and me. With the stroke of a pen Hancock has conveniently attempted to divert attention away from his own incompetence. It’s incredible, arrogant and frankly irresponsible but like the fake ‘Rule Britannia’ story it’s something we’re all getting used to. As the Kings Fund says: ‘Denying an inquiry into PHE is like finding it guilty without a trial.’ Those about to lose their jobs would no doubt agree with that.
