LETTER: Another failed experiment

ALONG with a series of other bright children at my school, I was part of a failed experiment to introduce standardised spelling, known as ITA.

We were left to cope with this disaster as six and seven-year-olds.

It took my teachers another two years until they spotted I needed reading glasses at the age of nine.

These experiments have been tried before.

They don’t work because no-one can create agreement across the English-speaking world about what changes there should be.

ITA was well thought out by committee and was frankly awful as a result.

Please drop this bright idea.

Otherwise you set back the education of a group of children by years, as mine was.

Taking an ‘h’ out of whether or an ‘a’ out of weather seems logical but, alas, it will not end there.
