Our decision

I notice David Cameron is to formally enlist President Obama in his propaganda war on behalf of the 'Remain in the EU' campaign.

Whenever I hear an American express pro-EU views I wonder why they are never (I know the answer really) asked a simple question.

What would be the reaction of the American electorate if their entire political establishment recommended that governance of their nation should be by an unelected, undemocratic, unaccountable body from 27 other nations who framed 75% of their laws, which they could not veto, and forbade them from forming their own immigration and trade policies”?

The American public would, I’m sure, express their views on the proposition very succinctly.

Of course this pro-EU rhetoric is from the so-called Democratic Party – the liberal left.

Contrast this to the three main contenders for the Republican nomination for the Presidency, Donald Trump, Ted Cruz, and Marco Rubio.

They have all expressed a healthy contempt for the EU. Interesting?

The late Caspar Weinberger, who was US Secretary of State under President Reagan, expressed this scepticism very well on one occasion in London.

He was asked a question about the EU and responded thus: “Have no truck with this incipient, introspective European Superstate.”

This issue is for the British people alone to decide.
