Patient flown to hospital by Coastguard helicopter after falling ill on ship off Hartlepool coast

Hartlepool RNLI volunteers joined the Coastguard in an effort to get a man to hospital after he became ill on a ship.

The team was paged at 5.55pm on Monday, August 3 by Humber Coastguard to assist the vessel, which was moored three miles off Hartlepool.

After launching the all-weather lifeboat, Betty Huntbatch, at around 6.15pm, four crewmembers went aboard the ship to provide casualty care to the patient.

The Coastguard helicopter arrived at around 6.45pm and lowered a member of the crew to assist with the casualty.

The unwell man was then winched from the ship and taken to hospital.

Second coxswain Garry Waugh said: “This was our second shout of the day and the sort of situation that the crew train for on a regular basis and it was also good to work with the helicopter crew.

"We wish the casualty a speedy recovery.”
