Able UK has given residents notice that it will be using ‘controlled and engineered explosive techniques’ at its Able Seaton Port site on Tees Road south of Seaton Carew.

It says the blast will be similar in size to one which initially caused confusion when it was suddenly heard and felt for several miles just over two weeks ago.

In a statement the company said: “Able UK will be using controlled and engineered explosive techniques tomorrow (November 27) as part of the operation to dismantle and recycle a 1,400 tonnes oil platform topside jacket at its Able Seaton Port facility near Hartlepool.

“The operation, which is being undertaken as part of a contract with Heerema Marine Contractors for the dismantling and recycling of a number of platforms, is the safest and most efficient method for this first stage in demolishing the 71 metre tall structure.

“The explosion, which is likely to be heard across the surrounding area, is expected to take place between 11am and noon tomorrow and will be similar in scale to that which took place earlier this month.

“Once the initial demolition has taken place the dismantling and recycling of more than 98 per cent of the platform will be completed within a six-day period.”
