ActionAid, which fights poverty and injustice abroad, has held the regular fundraisers in town once a month since at least 1995.

For over a decade they have been held by volunteer Jennifer Kerridge and supporters at the central library, now called the Community Hub Central in York Road.

But this month’s sale on Monday, March 30, will be their last. Rising expenses and a declining interest in books means it is getting increasingly difficult to raise funds.

Jennifer said: “The first event in Hartlepool was a coffee morning at St Matthew’s in 1980 which made £28.

“We have been holding the book sales for about 25 years at least. Unfortunately, there isn’t the same demand for books.

“I should like to thank the many donors, volunteers and customers who have helped throughout the years.

“The longest serving volunteer is Winnie Parker who is now in her late 80s.”

Despite the next sale being their last, Jennifer is still appealing for donations of paperback books, children’s books and tombola prizes such as DVDs and CDs.

Jennifer added: “Money raised will go to ActionAid’s emergency fund as it has throughout the year. Anything left over after the sale will be passed on to an international charity that provides books.

“Some will be passed on to children in the Hartlepool area. We are hoping to have a tombola in the town centre later in the year.”

The last two ActionAid book sales raised £126 for its emergency action fund – enough to provide 10 families with a week’s supply of clean water.

Jennifer was named Community Champion of the year at the 2018 Best of Hartlepool Awards for her long dedication to the charity.

The final sale on March 30, takes place in the community hub from 10.30am to 3.30pm.

If you can help with books or tombola prizes items can call Jennifer on (01429) 236032.
