Good Samaritan Stagecoach bus passenger went to injured cyclist’s aid after Hartlepool collision

Molly Horner, 19, was on the Stagecoach bus when it was involved in a collision with the bicycle on Middleton Road, Hartlepool, on Friday morning (September 18).

Despite hurting her shoulder in the incident, Molly rang 999 and comforted the injured woman, believed to be aged in her 30s, until the ambulance arrived.

It happened near to the Raby Road and Hart Lane crossroads at around 10.15am.

Molly, of Dyke House, said: “I felt a massive bump and heard the sound of the impact. It was like when a car does an emergency stop.

"I got off and saw her lying on the road in front of the bus with her bike next to her.

"It was a really horrible thing to see.

"I don’t think it was anybody’s fault. I think it was purely an accident.”

She rang the emergency services and stayed with the woman.

Somebody else put a blanket over her and she was subsequently taken the University Hospital of North Tees, in Stockton, for treatment.

Molly, who did first aid at school, added: "My mam and dad always raised me to put others before myself.

"I was in pain too but that didn’t matter. She was in need of help.

“I was trying to reassure her. I talked to her about random things; her favourite colour, stupid stuff, because she was shaking and I didn’t want her to go into shock.

"It was a bit of a difficult situation. I had the 999 operators in one hand and her on my other.

"The police and ambulance came so quick which I think made a difference.”

Molly suffered a sprained muscle in her left shoulder and police took her to Hartlepool hospital’s Urgent Care Unit.

She has since been in contact with the woman’s daughter and it is said she is now back home after hurting her lower back in the collision.

Molly also sent her some flowers and a card to cheer her up.

She said: “She’s very lucky. It could have been a lot worse.”
