Every year, thousands of men, women and children line up to take part in the 5k Miles for Men charity fun run which raises considerable funds for the charity and town sport and community clubs.

Sadly, due to the ongoing need for social distancing, this year's event cannot go ahead.

But the Miles for Men team have come up with a more relaxed, low-key event that supporters can still take part in and raise money for.

People are invited to the grounds of The Mayfair Centre at Seaton Carew Sunday, August 2, from 10.30am when there will be refreshments, collections, and, if they wish, do the race route.

They can run, walk, or cycle the course along the seafront and still get sponsorship.

Miles for Men founder Micky Day said: “We are absolutely gutted because everyone looks forward to it. It’s a fantastic day.”

In a video announcement shared on social media he added: “We are going to keep our social distancing. You can come down, have a picnic, sit, have a bit of chill time with your friends or the girls or the kids.

"You can come and take part in the walk on the day. You can run it, you can walk it, bring the kids on their scooters. You can even walk your dog along the seafront.”

Supporters can also complete the 5k at home if they have exercise equipment or in their local area.

They are encouraged to take videos of what they do and share it with Miles for Men on social media.

Because of the virus, the team have not been able to get t-shirts or medals produced, but people can wear last year's shirts.

Miles for Men team member Ralph Foster added: “This would have been the eighth flagship Miles for Men.

"We will be back next year bigger and better."

Sponsor forms will be available from The Extra Mile shop in Middleton Grange shopping centre open 10am-3pm Tuesday to Thursday, or call (01429) 860315.
