Hartlepool Foodbank now providing support packages delivered to doorsteps after new partnership with British Gas

Food bank clients in Hartlepool are getting the support they need delivered straight to their door in a new partnership with British Gas.

The utility company has partnered with the Trussell Trust charity which runs a network of food banks nationwide including Hartlepool.

The new arrangement, which began this week, means clients and staff are greater protected from the risk of catching or spreading coronavirus by cutting down on direct contact.

Previously, clients attended Hartlepool Foodbank’s base in Church Street to collect food and toiletries twice a week. After the lockdown was introduced they observed social distancing by queuing outside.

Co-ordinator Lisa Lavender said the food bank is coping remarkably well considering the restrictions on everyone’s movements and they have been overwhelmed with generous support and offers of help.

Talking of the new link up with British Gas she said: “It has been really good. Tuesday was our first day and went without any hiccups.

“It means that people don’t have to worry about coming outside if they are anxious and food is being taken to them which minimises the risk for everybody.

“They are the latest in a long line of individuals and agencies supporting us.”

Lisa said people have continued to give cash, including anonymous donations, and supporters bringing cars filled with food.

She highlighted Hartlepool Borough Council’s Children’s Hub team.

Lisa added: “I’m not surprised at the level of support we are seeing but it has been overwhelming.

“Historically, the community of Hartlepool have been very generous.

“We couldn’t have predicted any of the last few week but we have and are managing well.

“We also have a core group of volunteers who have continued coming in.”

Lisa said the lockdown has seen some users requiring more than one food parcel at a time due.

But she thinks demand is likely to increase when the full impact of people being made redundant or furloughed kicks in.

“I don’t think we have seen the true picture yet,” said Lisa.
