Hartlepool’s hospital trust has stepped up its drive-through coronavirus testing for staff.

Since the testing service was introduced at University Hospital of North Tees last month, staff working across the university hospitals of North Tees and Hartlepool and family members have been able to book appointments for the service if anyone in their household shows symptoms.

The system now includes a new, clearly signed traffic system, robust testing canopy and traffic safety barriers, which have been designed and installed by NHS-owned facilities company NTH Solutions.

Led by the Trust’s Organisation Development Department, swabbing is being conducted by staff deployed from various departments, all of whom have a clinical background and have been professionally trained to carry out the screening.

In addition to testing NHS staff, the service is supporting external healthcare organisations, including the North East Ambulance Service and local GP Surgeries, by testing their staff who are self-isolating.

Testing helps healthcare workers return to work more quickly where results are negative and in accordance with government guidelines.

Gary Wright, Deputy Chief People Officer at the Trust, said: “The health and safety of our staff and patients is our top priority so it is crucial that we have an efficient process for COVID-19 testing in place.

“Our staff are committed to fighting this pandemic and want to be at work, treating patients and supporting their colleagues. In the instances that members of staff are self-isolating but generally feel well, quick efficient testing gives them and us peace of mind so they can come back more quickly.”

Organisation Development Practitioner, Steven Yull, is making the most of his former nursing background to assist the screening team. He said: “Wind and rain can make an already difficult job more challenging, particularly when wearing PPE. The new canopy will help stop our visors getting wet which can make it difficult to see and should stop aprons from blowing around.

“The drive through system installed by NTH Solutions has made a huge difference to those conducting screening and being tested, as it has provided our hardworking teams with a safer, sheltered and more comfortable environment.”
