One of the homeowners said: “I reckon it’ll cost around 20 or 30 grand to sort because he’s got to get my car fixed, his car fixed and our house.”

He continued: “My car is a complete write-off. Thankfully the insurance are paying for it all.”

Both homeowners have had to take time off work to deal with the incident.

One said: “I’ve had to take a week’s emergency leave just to get everything sorted.”

The other added: "It’s just not something you expect on a Sunday.”

A spokesperson for Cleveland Police said: “Caledonian Road in Hartlepool was closed for a period of time on Sunday, February 15, following an incident where a car had collided with a house on the road.

“Shortly before 12.20pm, the blue Peugeot 2008 collided with a parked vehicle before going through a wall to the front garden of a property and hitting the bay window.

“Thankfully nobody was hurt in the incident.”

Hartlepool Borough Council put up fencing around the property to prevent any further damage as “glass continues to fall out the window”.

A spokesperson for Cleveland Fire Brigade said: “One fire appliance from Hartlepool attended. One vehicle, road traffic collision, no persons trapped.

"Crews assessed the scene and made it safe. The stop call was received at 12.45."
