Police find man’s body after search of River Tees

The man, whose identity is known to police, was seen to enter the river in the early hours of today, Saturday, January 18.

Divers had been carrying out searches of the river for several hours.

The man’s family was being supported by police while the search for him continued.

A Cleveland Police statement said: “At around 6am this morning a man was seen going into the River Tees from Victoria Bridge in Stockton.

“Police began an immediate search and have continued throughout the day with the help of specialist search divers.

“Sadly, we can now confirm that the man's body has been recovered from the water this afternoon.

“His family has been informed and is receiving support from officers.

“The death is not being treated as suspicious.”
