A porpoise found off the Hartlepool coast later died, despite efforts to save it.

The Hartlepool Coastguard Rescue Team was paged by Humber Coastguard on Friday, July 31 to help British Divers Marine Life Rescue (BDMLR) with the injured animal on the beach, near Steetley Pier.

The young animal had been badly injured by a pod of adult porpoises and had lost a lot of blood.

The team carried it to the BDMLR vehicle to be taken to a vet, where it later died.
