Runner takes on 10 marathons in 10 days in support of Hartlepool's Wharton Trust

Marathon man Stephen Kearney has hit the road to help underprivileged families in Hartlepool - 10 times over.

Account manger Steve set himself a challenge to complete 10 marathons in 10 days to raise money for the Annexe.

The Annexe, in the Dyke House, was formed almost 30 years ago, and is run by The Wharton Trust, which is focused on reducing the effects of poverty and worklessness on local people.

The centre runs a series of clubs, services and classes to support access to employment and healthier lifestyles and has been operating an outreach service during the coronavirus pandemic.

He said: "I have done something every year to raise money for good causes and this year I wanted to do something for a local charity.

"I spoke to my wife’s aunt Teresa Driver, who works for the Trust, and she suggested I do something for them.”

Stephen, 36, is due to complete his last run today, Sunday, December 6, but has had to take to two wheels for a couple of days.

"On my seventh run, I got quite a bad injury to my leg, so I had to get picked up and brought home by my wife,” he added.

"I went back out on the bike to complete the distance and I have had to do it on the bike for day eight and day nine, but I will be running again for the last day.

"I’ll be doing it dressed as Santa.”

Stephen has been delighted with the response to his fundraising, with his £500 target smashed within days and the topping £800 since.

"I only put the fundraising page up on November 26, so the amount we have received is amazing,” he said.

"I am absolutely over the moon. I still cannot believe it.”

Teresa Driver said she was overwhelmed by Stephen’s efforts and the amount raised, and added: “It has not been a good year for anyone.

"It has been hard for everybody, whether you have a lot or very little”It’s absolutely amazing what Stephen has done.

"It is going to be a tough couple of months for everyone and however the money gets spent, it will make a difference.”
