Hide AdTony, an Army veteran, watched from his front gate as he was given a big round of applause on Thursday night by neighbours, friends and ambulance service colleagues.
He said: “I’ve been to Afghanistan in my previous life before the ambulance service but I’ve never been more scared than I have during the last three weeks.
“But there was somebody there to help me from the NHS every step of the way and, although I was scared, I felt safe.
“The care I have received has been second to none and the kindness from everyone has been overwhelming. I’ll never forget that.
“How do you say thanks? It’s just not enough.”
