Third Hartlepool war memorial to be lit up red to mark Armistice Day

Tomorrow, Wednesday, November 11, between 5pm and 9pm, Seaton Carew War Memorial and the Victory Square and Redheugh Gardens War Memorials will all be lit up in red.

It comes after the town hosted low-key events to mark the lead up to Remembrance Sunday, with services held ahead of the day at the town centre and Headland spots late last week, with further small gatherings held at the weekend.

The town’s leaders had to rethink plans for the usual events due to the ongoing coronavirus guidance and the month-long lockdown, which is due to continue until Wednesday, December 2.

Denise McGuckin, Hartlepool Borough Council’s managing director, said: “As a result of the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, we’ve had to look at new and different ways to mark Remembrance and this will be the first time we’ll have lit War Memorials in this way.

“Remembrance allows each and every one of us the opportunity to pay tribute to the men and women of the Second World War generation and to those of all generations.

“Armistice Day is such an important date and one that deserves to be marked with respect and reflection.

“To support this occasion, we feel the new programme of lighting up War Memorials is something for us all to be proud of and commemorates Armistice Day with the due dignity it deserves.”
