The village is the latest area to receive backing from the Government’s £6million national Garden Communities Programme to help build up to 200,000 new homes nationwide.

Wynyard Garden Village will consist of up to 6,800 new homes, including some already built and in the pipeline as well as future developments, making it the largest new settlement in the North East, said the Ministry of Housing, Communities and Local Government.

The department said the funding will enable environmental assessments to be prepared during the planning process and use the latest design techniques to develop areas.

Hartlepool Borough Council will work closely with the majority landowners in the area, Wynyard Park Limited and Homes England, as part of the project.

Council leader Councillor Shane Moore said: “This announcement will fast-track the on-going development of a sustainable mixed use community incorporating residential areas with the neighbouring Wynyard Business Park, whilst also opening up new areas of land for development.

“The benefits will be significant – with much-needed high-quality new homes being built in the Borough of Hartlepool, leading to the creation of many new construction jobs.

“The new homes which will be built over the next 15 years and beyond, will also generate additional council tax income for the authority which has faced unprecedented financial pressures in recent years.

“We have lobbied hard for Wynyard to be included in the Garden Communities Programme, so we are delighted that the Government has now given the go-ahead.”

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen added he was delighted at the funding approval and was proof the Government were supporting his ambitions for the Tees Valley.

He said: “The proposed garden community will take more pressure off nearby developments when it comes to excessive building which is changing the character of our villages and towns for the worse and proving to be a real headache for residents.

“This announcement is more evidence that this government is listening to the concerns of people in this region and acting upon them.”
