Almost £1million of road and path improvements for Hartlepool - these are the streets and stretches which will benefit

A number of roads and paths in Hartlepool are to benefit from resurfacing work sooner than planned after an almost £1million boost in Government funding.

The works, predominantly already part of a five-year maintenance programme, are to be brought forward following an announcement Hartlepool Borough Council has been awarded £925,000 from the Government’s Pothole and Challenge Fund.

The money will be used for schemes from year two of that programme, along with other roads which have deteriorated at a faster rate than anticipated.

Councillor John Tennant, chair of the Neighbourhood Services Committee, said: “This extra funding is very welcome news indeed and represents significant additional investment in the condition of the borough’s highways infrastructure.”

Full reconstruction works will be carried out to the eastern section of Truro Drive using the funding, with £120,000 allocated to the scheme.

A section of the road has been closed to traffic for a number of weeks for reconstruction, and it had been due to re-open this week.

However it will now remain closed for 3 to 4 more weeks for further works which will see the full length of the road renewed.

Peter Frost, the council’s highways, traffic and transport team leader, apologised for the disruption and thanked residents for their understanding.

He said: “The current works in Truro Drive involve the section of road from Catcote Road down to Honiton Way, but the additional funding means we can now extend the improvements all the way down to the junction with the A689.

“Given that we are already on site, we think it is best to do the additional improvement works immediately rather than returning at a later date.”

Other roads to have resurfacing work as part of the funding include sections of the A179 Easington Road, estimated at £210,000, while work will also be carried out to the A179, west of Hart to A19, estimated to cost £100,000.

An estimated £100,000 of resurfacing work will also be carried out in Coronation Drive, on sections from Seaton Reach to Seaton Lane, while a further £75,000 of work will take place in Coronation Drive from Newburn Bridge to Toilets Car Park.

Resurfacing work will be taking place to Front Street in Hart, estimated at £80,000, as part of the scheme, and the full length of Chatham Road, which is estimated to cost £45,000.

Butts Lane, from Burns Close to the bend, will also see £35,000 of resurfacing work, while Thomlinson Road will have work carried out on the section after Casebourne roundabout, estimated at £20,000.

Blakelock Road, from Bede Grove to Shakespeare Avenue, and the full stretch of Glentower Grove, will also see resurfacing work, estimated at £35,000 and £26,000 respectively.

Additionally, resurfacing will be taking place along Olive Street, The Lawns, Beckston Close, and Bertha Street, with each scheme estimated to cost between £9,000 and £11,000.

Meanwhile five footpath resurfacing schemes have been selected to be carried out using the funding from the Government.

North Lane in Elwick will have work carried out over two stretches, from Hillcrest Grove to south end of the layby, and from North Close to opposite Hillcrest Grove, totalling an estimated £16,000.

In Hart, footpaths in Butts Lane, from Front St to Clevecoat Walk, and Palace Row, from South View to Butts Lane, will also be resurfaced, costing a combined £13,000.

Finally in Dalton Piercy Road, sections from Three Gates to Windmill will have work carried out on, estimated to cost £10,000.

The works will all be programmed in the current financial year.
