An application has been submitted to Hartlepool Borough Council from Marston’s PLC to allow for a temporary bar and to provide waitress service to the outdoor space at The Causeway, in Stranton,

Pub bosses said since their reopening in July outdoor areas have been extensively used to help adhere to social distancing.

Now an application to vary the premises licence for the site is looking to give them permission to provide a temporary bar outdoors, along with a stage area to provide live music in the future.

The application said: “The premises licence holder seeks to licence to external areas so as to facilitate waitress service as is currently recommended by the Government in the Covid-19 guidelines and going forward to facilitate the provision of sales directly into the area from the temporary bar location.

“It is envisaged that the temporary bar will also dispense soft drinks and snack food.

“The applicant seeks to prepare the external use after the current pandemic and is to construct a stage area. The external area is sought to be licensed for recorded and live music.”

The application looks to provide a licence for the external areas for 11am until midnight Monday to Saturday, and noon until midnight on Sundays.

It notes a risk assessment has already been undertaken with regard to potential noise impacts, adding the areas are already used and have been for some time without complaints, according to the application.

The application adds they believe the new licensing would in fact enhance supervision due to increased waitress service and the manning of the temporary bar.

The application includes no changes to the internal layout and existing opening hours of the pub, and bosses say the site will continue to uphold and promote the four licensing objectives.

A decision is due to be made on the application by the council licensing department in the near future.
