Hartlepool's parks and play areas to close - with residents urged to stay away from beaches

All of Hartlepool’s public parks and play areas are to be closed as part of efforts to limit the spread of coronavirus and to support social distancing measures.

Hartlepool Borough Council has taken the decision after considering the latest information around the outbreak.

It comes after a number of areas across Hartlepool – in particular Seaton Carew – were busy on both Saturday and Sunday.

Park gates have been locked but where there is open access to play areas residents are being asked to stay away with immediate effect and – where possible – stay at home.

Council chiefs said the decision is in line with a number of other councils across the region.

Chief Executive Gill Alexander said: “This is not a decision we have taken lightly but it is vitally important we try to limit non-essential contact with others – including outdoors –and these measures will remain in force until further notice.

“We would appeal to all residents to respect these measures which aim to protect people by limiting the potential for virus spread.”

Prime Minister Boris Johnson urged people to take social distancing seriously after crowds of people descended into open spaces over the weekend.

He said enforcement measures could be used, as in other countries, if people did not take heed.
