Cleveland Fire Brigade chiefs have said the opportunities provide the chance for people to gain transferable skills and qualifications, build confidence and experience, give back to the community and improve fitness.

In total the brigade is looking for around 30 on-call firefighters across the area, but applications are particularly welcomed for Headland Community Fire Station, along with the Yarm site.

On-call firefighters come from a cross-section of the community and must be able to respond and arrive at their nearest on-call fire station within five minutes.

The role can be done alongside primary employment or around other commitments.

The firefighters provide an on-call service to respond to emergency calls in the same way as full-time firefighters, using the same fire engines and equipment but are on-call rather than being based at the station.

Carl Boasman, assistant chief fire officer, said: “Being an on-call firefighter is a valuable role within the community and we are looking for people from all backgrounds and age groups.

“Responding to emergencies and delivering safety advice and education is exciting and rewarding.

“The role offers satisfaction and respect that comes with working as part of a team and providing a vital service to your local community.”

Anyone interested can drop-in on drill nights at on-call stations from 14 September, offering potential candidates the opportunity to chat to firefighters about their role and take part in some drill night activities.

Sessions will take place at Headland Community Fire Station, and also Yarm Community Fire Station, from 6pm to 7pm, on September 16,23,30 and October 7.

They will also take place at Saltburn, Redcar and Guisborough fire stations on September 15, 22, 29 and October 6 from 6pm to 7pm.

Sessions will be at Stockton Community Fire Station on September 17, 24, October 1 and 8, and at the Skelton station on September 14,21,28 and October 5, from 6pm until 7pm at both sites.

For those who can’t make a session in person Facebook live drop-in for drill night sessions will also be offered, where people can find out more.

This will also include some myth busting about firefighting opportunities for women, according to brigade chiefs.

To apply, applicants need to be at least 18 years of age with a good all round level of fitness, and no previous experience is required as full training is given.
