Plans have been lodged to convert a popular pub on the Headland into a house.

Proposals have been submitted to Hartlepool Borough Council planning department to make the changes to The New Inn public house on the corner of Durham Street and Broadfield Road.

The plans, submitted by Mr A Andrews, would see the building converted from a two-storey pub into a four-bedroom residential property.

A design and access statement submitted on behalf of the applicant states minimal work would be done to the building, and it is hoped the development could progress ‘in the coming months’.

It said: “Planning permission/change of use is sought to alter the former public house into a residential property that will ultimately secure the properties built form for now and into the future.

“The building will remain exactly as it is except for the removal of public house signage and the incorporation of a garage door to facilitate off street parking as requested by HBC [Hartlepool Borough Council].

“We would recommend that the change of use be welcomed and approved as soon as possible so that commencement on site is made within the coming months.”

If plans are approved the house would feature a living room, dining room, toilet and utility room on the ground floor, and four bedrooms, a kitchen and bathroom on the first floor.

Posting on ‘The New Inn’ Facebook page, pub bosses stressed they remain open as usual for the time being, with updates to be provided on future developments.

They said: “Just to advise customers we are open for business as usual, both in the bar and with Sunday lunches.

“Nothing has changed except an application has been submitted to HBC [Hartlepool Borough Council] for a change of use for the building.

“We will keep you updated with further developments.”
