Denise McGuckin, director of regeneration and neighbourhoods on the council, praised the work of the engineering and design team at the latest neighbourhood services committee.

She said: “We want to bring to attention the excellent work not only they provide in Hartlepool, but that they provide in other authorities across the region, which is benefiting Hartlepool Borough Council and therefore the residents of Hartlepool with the income generation.

“The team are doing some sterling work, especially when we are going through the difficulties we are financially.”

The Hartlepool team won Institution of Civil Engineer Project of the Year 2019 for the Whitley Bay promenade project, which councillors said was a prime example of the team’s work.

Coun Marjorie James said: “The big drive to go private sector organisations, Whitley Bay did that, it fell to pieces, it cost them an arm and a leg.

“They wouldn’t have been able to complete the scheme, they wouldn’t have had the wonderful outcome they had from it if Hartlepool Borough Council engineering team did not step forward, and they did, and still delivered an excellent scheme.”
