The centre, which cares for people who are terminally ill, received 1,000 aprons and 1,000 pairs of disposable gloves from Hartlepool Borough Council, and 1,000 face masks from EDF Energy, the operator of Hartlepool Power Station.

Shortages of such equipment have seldom been far from the headlines during the crisis.

Greg Hildreth, deputy fundraising manager at the hospice, said the donations have been warmly welcomed by the team.

“We are extremely grateful for all of the warmth and support we have received during this very challenging time. We really appreciate the donation of resources from Hospice patrons EDF Energy and from Hartlepool Borough Council,” he said.

“These items will help protect our staff and get us safely through the current crisis situation. I would also like to extend additional thanks to all of the other businesses and individuals who have come forward and shown their support for local Hospice patients.”

Craig Dohring, director of Hartlepool Power Station, said: “I am delighted that we have been able to play our small part in supporting the hospice in these challenging times. We all know the great work they do for this community and I am very proud that we have and will continue to have a rewarding partnership with them.”

The donations have also been hailed as further evidence of how organisations across the town are coming together for the benefit of local people during the coronavirus outbreak.

Jill Harrison, director of Adult and Community Based Services at Hartlepool Borough Council, added: “I’m delighted that we have been able to help Alice House Hospice which, as we all know, provides an absolutely first-class service to the people of Hartlepool and East Durham.

“I would also like to thank EDF Energy for their kind donation – it is another example of how community-minded local businesses are rallying round to offer support at what is an incredibly difficult time for all.”
