Mr Hill says the NHS Track and Trace system should be run by local health chiefs, and the furlough scheme should continue for businesses most affected by the latest restrictions.

Reacting to the Prime Minister’s announcement Mr Hill said: “What we need to see now is targeted financial support to local authorities, guaranteed local testing facilities, devolved track and trace responsibilities so that local environmental health and public health experts who know the patch can get on with the job, continuation of the original furlough scheme on a targeted basis to those businesses forced to close, better consideration for those falling through the gap like the self employed and more importantly an exit strategy to ending lockdown in local areas.

“We have been plunged into a world of uncertainty with confusing rules, real worries and understandable anger amongst people.

"Hartlepool families have very sadly lost loved ones to this hidden killer, just like everywhere else, but we have done so well so far compared to other places and we must remain focused and protective of one another.”

Mr Hill said it makes sense especially as those area’s reproduction numbers (R rate), hospitalisation and mortality rates have been higher than Hartlepool’s.

"That fact, I know has led to confusion and accusations of political bias,” he said.

Tees Valley Mayor Ben Houchen said it is ‘absolutely essential’ that everyone in the region follows the rules to control the virus as soon as possible.

He added: “If we do not follow these rules our region and our nation will face even stricter restrictions that no one wants to see, restrictions that will have a catastrophic impact on everyone’s livelihoods and physical and mental health.”
