North East mayor in intensive care after developing coronavirus

A mayor is being treated at a hospital’s intensive care unit after becoming seriously ill with coronavirus, with his family asking for people’s well wishes as he fights for his health.

Stockton-on-Tees Borough Council has confirmed its mayor, Councillor Mohammed Javed, is being cared for in the specialist ward in the town’s hospital after it was confirmed he had the virus.

A spokesperson for the authority said: “We are sending our best wishes to the Mayor of Stockton-on-Tees, Cllr Mohammed Javed, and his family, as he is in the intensive care unit at the University Hospital of North Tees after contracting coronavirus.

A member for the Parkfield and Oxbridge ward, the councillor was elected in May 2007 and is the first Asian person to be elected to the authority. He took on the role of mayor in June.

He sits on a number of committees including housing and community safety and complaints and appeals, as well as on the board of the International Family Centre and Corner House Project, which helps youths in the area.

He works in a job where he supports people with learning disabilities, is a school governor and is on the board of the Neighbourhood Management Pathfinder.

On his page on the council website, Cllr Javed, a married dad-of-three, says: “I came into politics because I like to serve people and I love to meet people from different backgrounds but most importantly of all I like to help people.”
