Hartlepool Borough Council will resume the kerbside brown bin collections from Tuesday, April 6.

They will be collected once every four weeks to start with due to pressure on council resources caused by Covid.

But council chiefs say they hope to revert to fortnightly collections soon if cases of the virus continue to fall.

Kieran Bostock, the council’s assistant director – Place Management, said: “The decision to initially resume with one collection every four weeks is in line with current health and safety guidance in respect of the safety of our teams, and it also reflects the pressure on existing resources due to COVID-19.

“However, if cases continue to fall then, hopefully, we will soon be in a position to be able to review the situation and move back to fortnightly collections.”

The council initially suspended the seasonal bin collections last year during the early part of the pandemic before restarting in late May on a four-weekly basis.

In a question and answer event earlier this year, the council’s managing director Denise McGuckin said: “We might have to continue with the four-week collection, we would really not want to do that, because we know people are affected by that.

“But hopefully everyone understands the council wants to prioritise refuse collection for everybody over the garden waste service.”

Residents are reminded they should only put loose, compostable garden waste in the brown bins such as grass cuttings, weeds and dead plants, twigs and small branches, hedge clippings, cut flowers and house plants, shrub prunings, leaves hanging basket contents.

They will continue to be emptied on the same day as green bins and should be put out by 7.30am.

Residents can find their collection dates online at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/findmybinday or call Customer Services on (01429) 523333.

Excess garden waste of up to 10 bags can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Burn Road by booking an appointment in advance at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/HWRCbookings
