Waste collections in Hartlepool: Council set to restart brown bin collections

Brown bin (household garden waste) collections will resume for Hartlepool residents from Tuesday, May 26.

Hartlepool Borough Council suspended brown bin collections in response to the Coronavirus outbreak in order to ease pressure on resources and ensure that key frontline services such as the collection of residents' green/grey bins and street cleansing could be maintained.

Until further notice, households will receive one brown bin collection every four weeks.

Residents can find out the collection dates for their particular property online at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/findmybinday or by calling Customer Services on (01429) 523333 on Monday to Thursday 8.30am to 5pm or Friday 8.30am to 4.30pm.

They can also download a calendar showing future collection dates from the council’s website.

Brown bins will be collected on the same day as green bins. As these collections are carried out by different crews, they may take place at different times during the day. As usual, residents are asked to please ensure that bins are presented by 7.30am on the day of the collection as the crews are unable to return for missed collections.

Residents are reminded that only loose, compostable garden waste will be accepted in the brown bin, such as grass cuttings, weeds and dead plants, twigs and small branches, hedge clippings, cut flowers and house plants, shrub prunings, leaves and the contents of hanging baskets.

Householders are asked to please ensure that all waste is contained within the relevant bin. As the crews are unable to take side waste, excess garden waste of up to 10 bags can be disposed of at the Household Waste Recycling Centre in Burn Road by booking an appointment in advance at www.hartlepool.gov.uk/HWRCbookings

Residents are also reminded that should priority Council services, such as household refuse and recycling collections, experience staff shortages as a result of COVID-19 cases, then brown bin collections may need to be temporarily suspended again.

Councillor John Tennant, Chair of the Council’s Neighbourhood Services Committee, said: “We are very pleased that we are now in a position to resume household garden waste collections, albeit on a reduced frequency for the time being. I would like to thank residents very much for their patience and support while the brown bin service was suspended.”
