Portsmouth are interested in a loan deal for Middlesbrough midfielder Marcus Tavernier.

The 19-year-old winger is one a number of targets being considered by Kenny Jackett after Pompey were dealt a blow in their pursuit of Newcastle United youngster Sean Longstaff.

Longstaff impressed in a loan spell at Blackpool last season and was scheduled to sign a similar deal at Fratton Park today.

However, the midfielder is set to stay on Tyneside for at least another fortnight after some promising pre-season displays saw him catch the eye of Rafa Benitez.

And one of those targets could be Tavernier, who starred for MK Dons during a brief loan spell last season.

He also made five appearances for Boro's first-team, finding the net against local rivals Sunderland.
