Buildings at the site were closed off and access was restricted while the incident was dealt with earlier in the day.
Well-drilled systems of investigation were brought in to handle the scenario which lasted for around an hour from 11.30am. Around 800 people were thought to be on the site at the time.
The incident was confirmed by a power station spokesman who said: "Hartlepool power station put into place well-rehearsed procedures after the discovery of a potentially suspicious package. As soon as the package was deemed harmless the site returned to normal operation."
