Race is on for a place in Hartlepool Marina run

The biggest road race in the Hartlepool calendar is back for another year.

And once again, the Hartlepool Marina 5 is expected to be a sellout with 550 runners tackling the seafront route on Sunday, April 3.

Organisers from the town’s athletics club Burn Road Harriers are predicting another year of quick times on the new route which is only being run for the second time.

This year’s five-mile race will start near the Wingfield Castle, make its way to the seafront promenade, before heading to Seaton Carew and back again.

Hundreds of runners will descend on hartlepool for the run, starting at 10.30am on April 3. Just like last year, the race will be chip timed to make for more accurate results.

Harriers chairperson Jane Wistow said: “It has been a sellout for the last two years and we are expecting the same again. It is hugely popular with all the athletics clubs in the North East. We get people travelling from as far as London and they come up to stay the weekend and do the race.

“Last year, we chip timed it for the first time and we are doing it again this year. It makes for a much more accurate time as your chip does not start until you run over the start line.”

Last year, Greg Jayasuriya, 27, from Middlesbrough & Cleveland Harriers headed the record 516-strong field and finished in 25 minutes 56 seconds. Drew Inglis, unattached, was second in 27 minutes and 04 seconds with New Marske’s Paul Darroch in third in 27 minutes 45 seconds.

Paul Wilson was the first Hartlepool finisher in ninth in 28 minutes 11 seconds. First female finisher was Kendal’s Sarah Tunstall in 29 minutes 08 seconds while Claire Salvin, in 128th, was Burn Road’s premier lady in 34 minutes and 16 seconds.

Entries are now being taken for this year’s event.

People can register online and the cost is £10.50 for affiliated runners and £12.50 for unaffiliated. Contestants have to be at least 15 to take part and the flat course will have water stations.
