REVIEW: Snow White and the Seven Dwarfs at Newcastle Theatre Royal

That’s the verdict from a nine-year-old, coming on 19 at times, who on the drive to the theatre said she “HATES” pantomimes.

But she was absolutely right it’s a show full of energy, fun and excitement.

To this pre-adolescent girl her exclamation that pantomimes aren’t “cool” evaporated within the opening minutes of the show.

It started with and explosion of excitement, acrobatics and comedy that left her in awe.

She even turned to me minutes in with amazement on her face and said: “Wow.”

The fairy tale made famous by Walt Disney has a perfect mix of dancing, singing, acrobatics and slapstick fun.

The main character of Muddles is played energetically by Danny Adams, who is appearing in his 10th anniversary show with co-star and dad Clive Webb, who had the crowd in the palm of his hand throughout.

Children and adults alike took delight in joining the boos for the evil Queen Lucretia, played by Steve Arnott, and Gary Watson as Prince William (of Wallsend) and Emily Shaw as Snow White played perfect parts with their wonderful singing voices.

The seven dwarfs were brilliant and gave a North East flavour to the usual “Hi Ho” with their rendition of: “Howay, howay, we come from Whitley Bay.”

The dancing is expertly choreographed, the sets were colourful and the special effects were very impressive.

The show ended with a standing ovation after more than two hours of theatrical delight.

It isn’t hard to see why the panto at the Theatre Royal has been such a success and has sold 90,000 tickets.

We left the theatre to calls of: “Can we come again next year dad.”
