Sarah will put the spark into science

The pupils are being given the opportunity to find out more about careers in science, technology, engineering and maths (STEM).

Dr Sarah Peers, vice-president of the Women’s Engineering Society and director of Cumbria-based EnergyUnearthed, will be spreading her infectious enthusiasm in a special talk called Everyone’s Game – Playing in Science and Engineering.

It is the first in a series of talks on science, technology, engineering and maths organised by Hartlepool council’s child and adult services department.

Oliver Harness, Hartlepool council’s senior school improvement adviser, said: “Sarah is a very engaging personality and her talks are always very inspiring and, above all, fun.

“Science, technology, engineering and maths has moved on massively in recent years and there’s a wide range of wonderful and rewarding career opportunities for young people, as this event will show.

“Although Sarah’s talk is aimed primarily at young people and their parents, members of the wider public are also very welcome to come along as well.”

Dr Peers’ background is in mathematics – she is a graduate of University College London (UCL) and has a Masters from Kings College London and a PhD in mechanical engineering from UCL.

She has worked on the planning and maintenance of structures for the offshore oil and gas industry.

The event takes place on Thursday, from 5.30pm to 7pm at Hartlepool College of Further Education, in Stockton Street.
