Second World War mortar discovered by bomb squad on beach at Seaton Carew

A number of emergency services vehicles were spotted at the coach carpark in Seaton Carew shortly after 9.30am on Tuesday, June 9 following reports of an ‘improvised explosive device’ on the beach, Cleveland Police said.

The force called in the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team for support and a cordon was put in place at the scene.

The British Army confirmed to the Mail that a Second World War mortar was discovered by its team.

The device, which was not live, was then taken back to its base in Catterick for disposal.

A spokeswoman for Cleveland Police said earlier on Tuesday: “Police received a report of a possible improvised explosive device on the sand dunes in Seaton Carew.

“Officers have requested the assistance of the Explosive Ordnance Disposal Team in order to assess and make safe the possible device.”
