Shocking pictures show two cars stuck in sand dunes on Hartlepool beach - police say drivers fled scene

Two cars are trapped in the sand dunes of a Hartlepool beach this morning (Thursday, April 23) after police were called to an incident last night.

Cleveland Police were called to reports of two vehicles being driven on the beach and sand dunes near to the Brus Tunnel in Hartlepool at 9.10pm on Wednesday.

The first vehicle, a Jeep Cheroke, became lodged in the sand on the top of the dune unable to move and the male occupants of the cars then made off on foot.

The Jeep was found by neighbourhood PCSOs with the keys still inside.

A second vehicle, a Mitsubishi L200, was found abandoned a short distance further up the beach after it had also become stuck in the sand.

Pictures show both vehicles trapped in the sand as Cleveland Police confirms both cars will be recovered on Thursday, April 23.

A spokesman for the force said: “Neighbourhood PCSOs worked together to locate the vehicles whereby one had had the misfortune of becoming lodged in the sand on top of the dune, unable to move.

“The males with the vehicle made of on foot however their vehicle along with the keys is now in the process of being recovered today and is no longer in circulation.

“This is a fantastic example of Police and the public working together to make our communities safer. Thank you.
