A spokesman for Hartlepool Police said: “We ask that members of the public are vigilant when using cash machines, if you spot something which does not look right do not use the machine and contact a member of staff. If the branch is closed please report the matter to the police using the 101 non emercency number.

“Modern devices can vary from extremely professional devices which copy your card and film you entering your PIN number to the rudimentary device which is believed to simply prevent you from withdrawing cash at a machine. Always cover your PIN and if in doubt do not use that particular machine.”
