It certainly was a glimpse into another era – and not one we are likely to see return.

No matter how many classic TV shows the BBC sees fit to resurrect (with the recent success of Open All Hours followed by announced revivals of Are You Being Served? and Porridge), I can’t imagine families ever again sitting around the “gogglebox” to watch an hour of spangled European variety performers and drawn-out magic tricks.

Indeed, put this old-fashioned entertainment on in front of my children (if you can draw their eyes away from Snapchat for long enough) and they’d more likely think it was from 100 years ago than a mere 30!
