Students will tackle domestic abuse during International Women's Day

An International Women’s Day event with a difference is being held, aimed at educating young people about healthy relationships and the warning signs of domestic abuse.

The event has been organised by the East Durham Domestic Abuse Network, with support from East Durham Trust.

At the centre of it all are students from East Durham College, who have designed the event and are hoping to tackle issues around domestic abuse, control, consent and healthy relationships.

The rolling show starts at 10.30am tomorrow, and will repeat in hourly slots throughout the day at the college, in Willerby Drive, Peterlee.

Members of the public have been invited to attend the first slot, at 10.30am.

Lindsey Wood, chair of East Durham Trust’s Domestic Abuse Network, said: “This is a great opportunity for us to raise the profile of women’s issues and highlight some of the services available locally.”

Among the performances set to be put on are interactive drama pieces, music, spoken word and dance.

Some of the pieces have been created specifically for the event by the college, in partnership with Harbour and Durham Constabulary.

Students will also get a chance to talk to organisations who can offer support, while there will be a listening booth.

In the booth, students can record what they will change in their lives because of the issues raised around the International Women’s Day.
