Honeyman's Sunderland future had been in doubt with his previous deal due to expire at the end of the season.

But the Black Cats have decided to keep the 21-year-old at the Stadium of Light and the attacking midfielder is now under contract until the summer of 2017.

Honeyman becomes the latest member of the Under-21s squad to commit his future to Sunderland after the likes of Ethan Robson, Rees Greenwood and Max Stryjek have all penned new contracts over recent weeks.

However, Sunderland are yet to decide on the futures of trio Mikael Mandron, Liam Agnew and Martin Smith, who are all out of contract this summer.

Their fate is likely to be decided by which division Sunderland are playing in next season.
