Teenagers guilty of Angela Wrightson killing to be sentenced today

The girls who were aged just 13 and 14 at the time of the savage attack have been warned by the judge to expect a life custodial sentence.

They were found guilty on Tuesday afternoon after just three hours of deliberations by the jury following a trial at Leeds Crown Court which lasted eight weeks.

Trial judge Mr Justice Henry Globe will also make a ruling whether or not the girls, now aged 14 and 15, can be named.

Their identity is currently protected due to their age.

Ms Wrightson, known to her family and friends as Angie, was found dead in her living room in Stephen Street, in December 2014.

The 39-year-old was attacked with a variety of weapons including a shovel, a TV, a coffee table and a stick laced with screws. She suffered more than 100 injuries.

During the attack, the two girls took selfies of themselves and even posted a picture on social media taken in the police van after the incident.

The older girl admitted responsibility for the killing but claimed diminished responsibility due to having a mental abnormality.

Detective Chief Superintendent Peter McPhillips said it was the most brutal murder he had experienced in 25 years on the force.
