Tireless Tommy racks up 106 miles in epic challenge

Tommy Biggins, from Hartlepool ran and walked an incredible 106-mile coast-to-coast challenge.

He set off from Maryport in Cumbria, through Yorkshire and back to Hartlepool, in just 48 hours, raising a total of £1,100.

Tommy said: “The run went really well. I ran 50 miles in 12 hours on the first day from Maryport to Alston, reaching the Hartside peak in the process and climbing 1,903 feet.

“The second day was a huge challenge and a big push for myself and I ran 56 miles in 13 hours. It took me two days to rest and now I’m fully recovered.”

It could be just the first of many more charity challenges to come.

He added: “I volunteer at the Hospice when I’m home from work so it makes a huge impact when you see where the money is going. I intend to keep doing challenges people think aren’t possible to raise more money for the hospice, as it is as important a charity as any in my opinion, with the most caring and selfless staff I’ve ever met.”

Tommy thanked all his friends and family across the UK for the support they gave, in particular to Kosa hairdressers and the Douglas hotel for their donations.

“The biggest thank you though is to my dad, who was my safety net, keeping me motivated and healthy the whole two days,” said Tommy. “I couldn’t have done it without him.”

The challenge coincided with the hospice’s Purple Week of fundraising activities.

Janice Forbes, community fundraiser at the hospice, said: “On behalf of everyone at the hospice I would like to say a huge thanks to Tommy, not only on completing this amazing challenge, but for raising a fantastic total for our patient care services. It was a pleasure to meet Tommy when he finished his run at Seaton Carew.”
