More than three months of Hartlepool roadworks begin as part of gas mains project

Works to replace ageing gas mains due to last more than three months have started.

Engineers for Northern Gas Networks began replacing old metal gas mains with new plastic pipes to keep customers’ supply safe and reliable on Monday, July 5.

Work is centred around Wooler Road and Hart Lane, in Hartlepool

The gas company has apologised for any inconvenience caused by temporary traffic lights and partial lane closures that will be in place for the duration of the works.

In total, the scheme is due to take 14-15 weeks.

Hart Lane and Wooler Road typically see heavy traffic during rush hours, especially around school start and pick up times.

Three-way temporary lights resulting in single file traffic some delays to motorists started on Monday at Wooler Road and Serpentine Road between the junctions of Greenbank Court and North Drive.

Steve Pigott, business operations lead for Northern Gas Networks, said: “We would like to apologise in advance for any inconvenience caused during these critical works.

"However, it is vital we complete them in order to continue to maintain a safe and reliable gas supply to the residents of Hartlepool.

“We want to assure residents and road users that we will be working hard to complete this essential scheme as safely and as quickly as possible.”

Northern Gas Networks says while the majority of the work will be carried out in the street, engineers will need to access some customer properties.

Residents will be written to ahead of access being needed to clearly explain the process.

The three-way lights will later move to Tunstall Grove and Serpentine Gardens where engineers will replace gas mains once they have completed work on Wooler Road.

Four-way temporary traffic lights, manned at peak times, will be put in place as work is carried out at the junction of Serpentine Road and Hart Lane.

The final phase will see work will take place at the junction of Granville Avenue and Hart Lane under three-way traffic lights.

Signs warning of the work and for diversions will be put in place.

The work has been planned in conjunction with Hartlepool Borough Council.
