Air ambulance called to crash on A19 near Peterlee - carriageway closed in both directions

The air ambulance has been called to the A19 near Peterlee where a car has collided with the central reservation – a closure on the southbound and northbound carriageway is in place.

A female patient has been taken to hospital via road following the crash on the A19.

Emergency services were called to a crash on the A19 in between the A1086 and the B1320 near Peterlee at around 3.30pm on Thursday, March 26.

A spokesman for Durham Constabulary said: “We were called at 3.20pm today after a car collided with the central reservation on the southbound carriageway of the A19 between the A1086 and B1320 junctions near Peterlee.

“The Great North Air Ambulance were also called to the incident to treat the sole female occupant of the vehicle.

“The road has been closed in both directions while emergency services work at the scene and a diversion is in place.

Motorists are asked to avoid the area.”

The Great North Air Ambulance has confirmed it attended the scene although no patients were airlifted to hospital.

Durham Constabulary is currently at the scene and both the southbound and northbound carriageways are closed.

Highways England says traffic is being diverted via the A1086 Essington Way and the B1320.

A spokesman for the North East Ambulance Service said: “We were called at 3.20pm to a road traffic collision on the A19 southbound at Peterlee.

“We dispatched a double-crewed ambulance, two of our hazardous area response teams, a specialist paramedic, a rapid response paramedic and also requested support from the Great North Air Ambulance Service.

“A female patient was taken by road to Sunderland Royal Hospital’s accident and emergency department."

The current diversion routes:

Southbound traffic is being diverted via the Hollow Square symbol

Exit the A19 and take the A1086, continuing for just under 1 mile

Join Essington Way and continue southbound for just over 1 mile

Travel westbound on the B1320 for just under a mile, rejoining the A19 southbound.

Northbound traffic is being diverted via the Solid Circle symbol

Exit the A19 northbound and take the A181, continuing for just over half a mile

Join the B1280 (Sellers Lane) and continue for 2.5 miles to the junction with the B1283

Turn right onto the B1283 (Durham Lane), and travel for just under 2 miles to the A182 junction

At the A182/A19 junction, rejoin the A19 or continue locally
