New flights to Frankfurt launched from Newcastle Airport as Prime Minister gives hope of holidays abroad this summer

Newcastle International Airport has added to its list of destinations with a new daily service to Frankfurt Airport from airline Lufthansa.

The new route to Germany is due to start on June 28, 2021 with flights operating seven days a week between the two cities.

Nick Jones, Chief Executive of Newcastle International Airport, said: “We are delighted to welcome Lufthansa back to Newcastle International Airport and it is fantastic news for the

North East and beyond that the airline will be operating this new daily service to Frankfurt.

“The addition of this route not only provides a new direct destination, but also access to another major global hub for the North East public from the airport.

“Frankfurt Airport feeds directly into Lufthansa’s extensive onward connection network and will give passengers even more opportunity to travel to destinations across Europe and the

wider world."

The new destination follows the Prime Minister’s announcement that foreign holidays could be permitted from May 17, with hope that all Covid restrictions will be lifted on June 21.

In the hours after the announcement on Monday, February 22, airlines reported a surge in holiday bookings.

Airline easyJet said bookings by UK customers for the summer season were more than four times higher compared with the same period during the previous week.

August is the most booked month, followed by July and September.

The most popular destinations for this summer are beach resorts including Malaga, Alicante and Palma in Spain, Faro in Portugal and the Greek island of Crete.
