East Durham College’s own travel agency, EDC Travel, was opened by Hays Independence Group founder and director, John Hays.

Mr Hays cut the ribbon on the new EDC Travel store, based in the college’s Peterlee Campus, which is a fully ABTA Bonded Travel Agency set up by the college in partnership with Hays. The store will be managed by Julie Heath, a former assistant manager for national travel firm Thompson, who will be joined by travel and tourism students, gaining valuable work experience and the necessary skills to get ahead in the industry.

In addition, students at the college’s Peter Jones Enterprise Academy will help in the running and marketing of the shop to gain experience on how a real commercial business is set up and ran.

Mr Hays said: “I am very proud that Hays Travel is part of such a great opportunity for students to develop key skills and gain hands on experience of working within the travel industry.

“The travel industry is a fun and rewarding environment to work in. I have been hooked since 1980, and I wish EDC Travel the best of luck.”
