Vine posted a Tweet to his account @theJeremyVine yesterday, which said: "One Britain, two different worlds: Chelsea and Hartlepool today."

The tweet had an accompanying image which showed two different crimes, one committed in Putney, Chelsea, and the other in Hartlepool.

While the Chelsea crime was about a shoplifted "hurling Camembert" at staff, the Hartlepool one was about a thief being jailed for stealing bacon.

Soon after the post, some responded to Vine accusing him of being a snob, but the journalist, who took part in Strictly Come Dancing last year, said he was "pointing out a distribution in wealth which many see as unfair".

Twitter user Ian Pollock (@ipolnufc) said: "So- we don't eat posh cheese in the north east? Surprised this came from you - didn't you study at Durham?"

In response to one user, who hailed the variance in house price as "crazy" - but added that Northern folk were better, Vine said: "People in North WAY better than in South IMHO."
