Was Jim Hartlepool's longest serving worker?

Thirty years ago, he made the front page of the Hartlepool Mail after amassing 60 years of service with the same company. We’re asking, who do you know with an incredible service record with the same business, community group or organisation?

Jim was 75 when he featured in the Mail and he told us at the time that he had no intention of bowing out just because he had reached his diamond anniversary. Jim worked for Gilbert Bunting and Co in Church Street.

He started as an office boy and worked his way up to book keeper and cashier before taking over as a supervisor on three mornings each week. He said back in 1987: “I plan to carry on for as long as I can. I enjoy my work.”

By then, his office was on the third floor of the building, but Jim was not put out by that. He said: “It does not bother me but once I am up there I stay!”

He said he decided, when he had reached 65-years-old that he wanted to stay on to keep his mind occupied. Colleagues planned to celebrate his loyal service by holding a party.

Partner in the firm Edward Bunting said in 1987: “He has been an incredibly loyal worker. He is part of the place.

But our research at the time showed that, if Jim wanted to be a British record breaker, he would have had to stay in work until 2013 as two people had worked for the same employer for 86 years.
